But the second-most nominated influential breakthrough - the internet - was more expected.
A quarter of those surveyed said the world wide web was the most influential scientific or technological development of the last century.
When it came to Generation Y - people aged 18 to 29 - the internet was ranked number one.
That could be because younger people take antibiotics and other medical breakthroughs for granted, Prof White said.
By contrast, they've experienced the rapid development of computing for themselves.
Mobile communications ranked low on the list, with just four per cent of respondents claiming it was the most influential innovation.
Space exploration was favoured by just two per cent of people, while mass car production, didn't get a single vote.
The survey also asked what development had the most positive impact on the way Australians lived over the last century.
